A bankruptcy will absolutely stop a wage garnishment. When you file a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the automatic stay goes into effect. That protects your income from being garnished by creditors, even if the garnishment is already in place. Sometimes it takes a week or so for the garnishment to stop once you have file bankruptcy. Money that was withheld before the filing is gone. You will not be able to get that money back. But if money is withheld from your paycheck after the filing, you should be able to get that money refunded to you.
